Stepping away from publishing for a moment, here are some things that are on my mind...
+ Amanda Palmer. If you missed it on the internet (or don't follow my Twitter, where I spluttered with rage), Amanda Palmer posted to Twitter, "ironic product placement is only ok if you take no money & beyond that give all the income to something ironic, like the Klan." (I refuse to link to her, but here's a screencap.) I actually like some of her music, but... seriously? This, plus her fat hatred in various blog posts, plus Evelyn Evelyn, plus her Twitter post about "setting aside disabled feminists," plus the book she did glorifying violence against women, plus her total inability to apologize for hurting people means I have deleted all Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls music from my iPod and computer, and as soon as I find the Who Killed Amanda Palmer? cd, I'll be throwing it away.
I mean, there are some things that I can get past. Like, maybe her fat hate is just internalized shame! Her coffee table book full of sexy pictures of herself dead is her expressing her art and empowering herself, and it's not up to me to judge that. But she's not stupid, and ironic hipster racism is still racism, and her refusal to interact with people criticizing her work while simultaneously making fun of them and interacting with her die-hard fans... All of that together just screams out to me that she's not an artist I want to support. Especially when there are so many amazing artists I can support who are not like this.
Her fans defend her: It was ironic. (No, it wasn't.) It was a joke. (No, it's not.) You don't have a sense of humor! (Not about things like this, no.) You are totally misinterpreting what she meant! (Namechecking the Klan to be "edgy" is pretty hard to misinterpret.) But Neil Gaiman likes her! (...?? SO WHAT?)
If you haven't seen it yet,
sparkymonster wrote a really wonderful post: "A lesson in good vs. bad irony thanks to Amanda Palmer"
Trigger warning: the post is picture-heavy, and contains graphic images and discussions of hate crimes.
The comments on that post are closed thanks to the trolls, but I recommend reading as much of them as you can anyway. Several threads have interesting discussions.
+ Television. Whilst writing a blog post about why I love watching Castle (it will be posted next week!), I came up with a way to make every single television show better: Cast Kyle Secor and Gina Torres. Can you even imagine? I dare you to say that wouldn't improve pretty much any television show! Personally, I would give a lot to see Gina Torres as a Time Lord on Doctor Who -- with Kyle Secor as her companion! I should start a Facebook group or something.
+ Baking. I bake this "Quick and Easy Artisan Bread" almost every week. We eat it throughout the week, using it for sandwiches or dipping into hummus or with butter (well, Smart Balance!) when we eat pasta. If there's any left over by the end of the week, I cube it, let it sit out to dry overnight, and bake it into a baked french toast or bread pudding type dish. If you're going to let it rise longer than 1-2 hours (the longer the rise, the more intense and sourdough-y the flavor), I recommend dropping the amount of salt down to 3/4 tbsp.
+ More baking: For some reason, an entire quart of ricotta cheese was purchased, although only a half cup of it was used. Does anyone have a (vegetarian) recipe that calls for ricotta cheese that does not involve pasta? I am not interested in cheesecake, but I'm down for pretty much anything else.

+ Link roundup! Here are some things I've been reading:
- "Save Me From Myself, Skinny Jesus Chef!: Shakesville on Jamie Oliver's new show, where he shames fat people, poor people, and mothers for not living the way he thinks they should.
- "A long-delayed missive on “childhood obesity”, from a onetime obese child.": Lesley at Fatshionista talks about being a fat kid and why specifically targeting fat kids hurts more than it helps.
- "Does the Obesity Task Force Even Have Any Obese People on It?": Betsy Phillips at Nashville Scene answers this question: NO. Why not?
- "Nicholas Sparks, Miley Cyrus share a 'Last Song' love story": If you can read the whole article without wanting to punch Nicholas Sparks in the face, you're more patient (and probably nicer) than I am! This article made me feel really smug about the fact that I've always hated this dude's writing.
- ...I just went through my browser history for the last four or five days, trying to find a really happy, positive link to share, and could not. So instead, I give you this: "Maru and tambourine"!!!!
