TV Show Meme!

I do not think I have ever done a meme at this journal before! But there's a first time for everything, and I've been following along as some people in my Dth circle and on my LJ flist have done this one, and I like it! (I'd be interested in something similar for books. Maybe I'll put one together!)

Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled

This is easy: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I was so skeptical of that show when I saw the ads for it, but once I saw it, I was in love. There was so much about it that was wonderful, so much about Sarah that I could relate to, even though she is trying to, you know, save the world from the metal and I've never even been in a fistfight or (to my knowledge) met a cyborg.

(Note that I am totally not dismissing out of hand the possibility that I have at some point met a cyborg without knowing it. I believe in magic, people.)

Anyway, I thought some of the pacing of the show was really weird -- the whole first season was like one long movie cut up into parts, and then the second season was also weird, although in a different way. Some of the episodes were soooo slooooow, and some were so fast-paced; it was hard to get comfortable with it.

At the same time, I actually found I really liked that -- I liked not being comfortable. Most importantly, I really trusted the people who worked on the show (the writers, directors, (most of) the actors) to tell me a good story and not try to wriggle out of the hard parts or take shortcuts. I was willing to go where they wanted to take me, because whenever I went with them, I didn't regret it.

I loved Sarah. I loved Cameron. I loved Derek. This is not my favorite John, but I appreciated how complicated his character was, his life shaped -- ruined -- by a destiny that, if he actually does his job right, won't ever happen.

I thought the end of the second season was amazing. I wish that there'd been a third season -- I want to know where they were going! Some nights when I can't sleep, I lie in bed and think about that season ender. It is a really good place to end the show, a good place to kick off a new part of the franchise (don't talk to me about Terminator Salvation; everyone who participated in that horrorshow is dead to me) -- but I feel like I had such an intense relationship with the show and such a trust in the people who worked on it that whatever comes next in the franchise is going to have to work twice as hard to gain my trust and is going to have to be three times as good to live up to not only how amazing the actual show was, but also all the amazing potential wasted when the show was canceled.

Right now, The Sarah Connor Chronicles is on sale at Amazon for $21/season: the first season | the second season

Or, of course, grab it at your local!

Signed,
Bitter And Sad, who is decidedly not going to mention that the list of actors on the amazon page is three freaking men, even though the show is really about Sarah and Cameron.
