Although it's unlikely I will ever write a book, I still read this with interest. "Don't be an idiot" is good advice for any situation, not just aspiring writers making a pitch to an editor ;)

And if the book you mentioned last ever is published, I hope you give us all a "heads up" if you know about it, so I can buy it. I'm interested in it just hearing what you said about it.

Ah, feel free. I don't actually read my flist on a regular basis -- I just automatically friend back everyone who friends me. :)

LOL Thanks.

When I friend some folks with long FLs, I don't expect to be friended back. I just am intrigued by their posts, and want them regularly on my FL, wich is getting a bit busy itself.

Off to add you.

I think I need a bigger word than thanks, here. :o) While I still have quite a bit of project polishing (and courage mustering) to do before I'm ready for a pitch, this post really gives me a clearer picture of what to expect, and of what will be expected of me! Thanks so much for taking the time to share this.

Squeee! Pitches on demand!

Makes me kind of glad I'm in sf which doesn't do formal pitches. I'd probably have choked on 'em back in the day.

Great article.

You mentioned you were going to have a free day in Atlanta. I don't know much about Atlanta, but I live in middle Tennessee and have been to Chattanooga about a million times (about an hour's drive from Atlanta). If you have a car and don't mind wrestling with Atlanta's terrible traffic, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga is really quite fantastic. If you're into aquariums, I recommend it.

I once took pitch at a World Horror Con. Everyone was very nice, but very confused -- not one of them had any clue how to do a pitch session. Whereas RWA has it down to a fine art.

Personally, I prefer the approach Writers Weekend took during its first year: a table n the shade with a bottle of scotch. Hee.

I saw a link to this earlier today and bookmarked it -- I'm very glad I did. It was very interesting reading in addition to being informative. Thanks so much for taking the time to write it.

Yay! Good luck with your art proposal!

Perhaps one day I will write The Robot Cheerleader Wars. It would, of course, start with the line...

Cheerleaders get no respect.

Heeee.

You get onto the pitch schedule through the con you're attending, usually when you pay your registration fee.

Glad to be helpful!

If the book ever gets published, I'll be sure to let you know! It's a pretty darn interesting book. :)

I remember walking by the smoking area about halfway through the encore pitch, thinking to myself, "I've just missed something really good." In June, you'll just have to do it again, [livejournal.com profile] dthon.

Oh thanks for this, I always wondered the ins and outs... and I so would have taken the manuscript with me not knowing any better LOL. This is so going in my memories. Double thanks

You've never heard of me, and probably won't for at least another couple of years, but I want to offer anonymous thanks for this fantastic infodump. (Okay, I know that's the wrong term, since infodumps don't generally keep people sitting on the edge of their chair hanging on every word... but you get the idea.)

BOOKMARKED with a vengeance.

Cheers!

But would any of the ADVHSAM's be interested in cheesy popcorn, or would it, too, become perverted by exposure and inclusion?

I'm just thinking of unpopped kernels and orange residue in uncomfortable, hard-to-explain places.

I got directed over here through another link, and this is wonderful advice. Sometimes I think the business side of this whole writing game is more challenging than writing the book in the first place.

Thank you!

Thanks.

Some mysterious but dashingly handsome fellow has forwarded this link to Miss Snark, and she posted a link to this post.

Prepare yourself for the hordes.

To quote Harlan Ellison when advising a young writer who went on to write Babylon 5.

"You write boring crap. Stop writing boring crap."
