Once again, this was a great, informative post and maybe more than I wanted to know, LOL. I think I should just wallow in uninformed bliss, thinking my books are selling out and the NYT just neglected to add my name to the list ;-)
One question -- what kind of numbers are publishers looking for before they move an author the other way, from mm to hc? Is there some magic formula for deciding who gets the big green light? I've heard, too, that going into HC can be really risky for the author because if it tanks, the editors will all want to avoid being anywhere near the person who was most responsible for that third quarter loss.
Pity about the job doing cover art, too. I have some real talent with stick figures and could have saved you at least $10 on that Rygel cover ;-)
