Isn't something like this done in-house? only some books? None? How much are you PAYING these freelancers??!
Shit... makes me glad I can do this myself... All editors should be forced to layout their own books. :) InDesign is your friend.
Otherwise, your imaginary P&L numbers look remarkably like mine. The "free" photographic cover art is often a godsend on a book with tight margins. Our Haldeman coer was similiar to your imaginary one. :)
