The other day I was complaining to [livejournal.com profile] gl0ry_gl0ry that I don't have any romantic suspense novels to read, so she cheerfully sent me a couple that were lying around the office.

I opened the first one, and was immediately annoyed:
Tlipping [sic] into the ICU unit of the private military hospital wasn't an easy task. It would be considered insane from most men's point of view. Even a SEAL's. But that was exactly what former Lieutenant Ian Richards of the Navy SEALs did.

Okay, I'm a bitch. Let's just get this right out there. I am totally a bitch. But come on. That is the first paragraph, and the first word has a typo! And, in the same sentence, "ICU unit"!!

My very next thought is this: Maybe I read too much Dick Marcinko as a teenager (although, when it comes to Marcinko, can you ever really have too much? Start with Rogue Warrior, his autobiography, if you are inclined toward Navy SEALs.), but. When I think of Navy SEALs, I do not think of guys who are intimidated by the idea of breaking into a military hospital. I mean -- I mean -- what? It's a damn hospital, Navy SEALs could do that in their sleep. Even if this chick isn't going to do some research or talk to some SEALs, couldn't she have read a damn Suzanne Brockmann book?

(And now that I am looking for stuff to complain about, I am pretty sure that the guy on the cover of the book is wearing his dog tags wrong. JUST SAYING.)

The book is Killer Secrets by Lora Leigh. Apparently she is a New York Times bestselling author. Who knew? If you're interested, it's in my bookmooch inventory. Taken!

Have y'all read any good romantic suspense novels lately? I'm withering over here.

I haven't read any good romantic suspense novels, but I did read Elizabeth Scott's Living Dead Girl.

And it is incredible.

Is it?? I read Stealing Heaven a few days ago, and think it's the best I've read of hers yet. I'll have to find Living Dead Girl and read it for myself.

By its very subject matter, it's a very different book from Bloom and Perfect You (alas, I haven't gotten my hands on Stealing Heaven yet, so I can't compare.) It's very raw and very strong, and doesn't shy away from its very painful subject material.

It's one of those books you devour in a single gulp because you can'y stop reading.

Dude, Stealing Heaven is the same way! I was late picking [livejournal.com profile] gl0ry_gl0ry up at the airport because I had to sit and finish it! If Living Dead Girl is the same way, I can't wait to read it. awesome.

the Award Winning (really!) Nocturnal Urges series by local author Elizabeth Donald. Paranormal Romance Murder Mysery set in Memphis (TN, not Egypt). First two books are published together in one volume titled Nocturne, the third Abaddon, is out as an e-Book. Though I've not read all three (paranormal romance not my thing), I have it on good authority that the third is the best of the lot. I can get you a copy of the first two, if you'd like...It should be just right over there..(points)..., and the eBook is available from Cerridwen press.

By the way, StLouis Public Library, effective 4/1, has e-books for download-checkout. You had mentioned that once.....

I have been really down on paranormal romances lately, because all the ones I've read in the last year that I haven't edited myself have been super crappy and disappointing.

Are they really going to start offering e-books for download? That is super exciting! Yet another reason to not leave my apartment. *g*

third book = least romance, most suspense/mystery.

The solution seems obvious: you need to edit more paranormal romances. :)

I would love to, but I am not getting submissions of sufficient quality! Ditto romantic suspense. It kind of makes me wonder what other people are seeing, if these are what's getting publishing. You know?

Indeed I do. I have edited only one book--an upcoming micro-press anthology of Lilith tales entitled LILITH UNBOUND--and some of the stuff people sent was mind-boggling. Fortunately, I also received a lot of really good stories, but there was a sufficiency of wtf? submissions to inspire a whole new level of empathy with professional editors.

Yeah, I get a lot of WTF submissions, & not a lot of quality! I am bitter about that.

Okay, now I'm getting nervous about that paranormal/thriller I've been planning to submit....
