Directly from the UFT (United Federation of Teachers) petition:

The New York State Board of Regents is considering several cost containment proposals (also known as “mandate relief”) that will directly impact the jobs of speech therapists. If adopted, these proposals will eliminate minimum frequency and duration requirements (currently two thirty-minute sessions a week) for speech therapy services and pave the way for the Legislature to repeal the requirement that teachers and service providers receive a paper or electronic copy of students’ IEPs. These changes are being proposed to save money, not to help kids.

These kids need these services. Cutting the budget does not help kids. My mom has been a reading teacher in a hard-to-staff (also known as "poor and violent with low test scores") school for almost twenty years, and every single day she comes home with another story about how the budget is being cut, which impacts the ability of every teacher (and there is not enough money to pay enough teachers, either, by the way) to give these kids a good education.

Please sign this petition -- it doesn't just concern people in NYC, but everyone who cares about making sure kids get the services they need.
